Apparently bunnies are not good with general anaesthetics. Has anyone else had a bunny around the same age that had been operated on ? He is not in pain - I am not sure of our alternatives. We have a house bunny (aged 8) with a neck cyst. The vet suggested surgery but I worry about his chances ?
age has nothing to do with any small animal getting an anesthetic risks are risks.
if your rabbit is healthy and his heart is healthy he will be fine and pull through it.We have a house bunny (aged 8) with a neck cyst. The vet suggested surgery but I worry about his chances ?
If the vet isn't experienced with rabbits, I'd take your bunny to a vet that is... A rabbit is considered an ';exotic'; in the veterinary world, and most small animal vets deal primarily with dogs and cats.
Rabbit vets will give your baby a better chance of survival... They need different anesthesia than dogs and cats... And rabbit medicine has come a long way, it isn't nearly as risky as it once was... if the vet suggested surgery, he may be suspicious of a malignant growth... But again, if he's not experienced with rabbits, take him to somebody that is.
In the old days vets were afraid to do surgery on rabbits, but rabbit medicine with a rabbit savvy vet has come a long way. If your bunny isn't in pain - and sometimes that is hard to tell since rabbits will hide the fact that they are in pain sometimes until it is too late - you may want to wait.
Here's some info on anesthesia:
